The Serpae Tetra (Hyphessobrycon eques), is a hardy schooling fish known for its vibrant reddish-orange body and a distinctive black spot behind the gills. Its slightly translucent fins may have dark edging, giving it a striking contrast in the aquarium.

Key Care Points:

  • Behavior: Active and known fin nippers. Best kept in schools of 6 or more to spread out the behaviour.

  • Diet: Omnivorous. Eats flakes, pellets, and enjoys frozen/live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.

  • Lifespan: Typically 5–7 years with good care.

  • Max Size: Grows up to 1.5–2 inches (4–5 cm).

  • Growth Rate: Fast; juveniles reach around 1 inch in just a couple of months.

The Serpae Tetra’s fiery color and lively behavior make it a favorite for energetic community tanks. Avoid keeping it with long finned fish such as most bettas, goldfish, etc.
