Redtail Catfish

The Redtail Catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus) is a massive and striking freshwater fish known for its vibrant red tail, elongated body, and whisker-like barbels. Native to South America, particularly the Amazon, Orinoco, and Essequibo river basins, it is a popular choice among experienced aquarists with very large tanks or ponds.

Key Care Points:

• Behavior: Predatory and territorial; best kept alone or with similarly large, robust species in a spacious setup at its adult size.
• Diet: Carnivorous; thrives on high-quality sinking pellets, fish, shrimp, and other meaty foods. Avoid overfeeding, as they are prone to obesity.
• Lifespan: Can live 15-20 years with proper care.
• Max Size: Grows up to 4-5 feet (120-150 cm) in captivity, though growth depends on the size of its environment.
• Growth Rate: Very fast; can grow 1-2 inches per month or more  when young, requiring a progressively larger tank as it matures.
