The Red Eye Tetra (Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae), is a hardy schooling fish recognized by its silver body, black tail band, and the distinct red ring around each eye. Native to rivers and streams in South America, it’s an active mid-level swimmer that does well in community aquariums.

  • Behavior: Peaceful and lively. Best kept in groups of 6 or more. 

  • They enjoy open swimming space with some plants for cover.

  • Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts flakes and pellets, along with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.

  • Lifespan: Typically lives 5 years, sometimes longer.

  • Max Size: Grows up to 2.5–3 inches (6–7.5 cm).

  • Growth Rate: Moderate; reaches around 1.5 inches within the first 3–4 months.
