The Peacock Bass (Cichla ocellaris) is a powerful, predatory freshwater fish admired for its size, strength, and vibrant colors. Native to the Amazon and other river systems in South America, this species is distinguished by its golden to green body, vertical barring, and the characteristic eye-like ocellus near the tail fin.

Key Care Points:

  • Behavior: Aggressive predator; best housed with other large, equally robust fish. Extremely active and eye catching in the tank, especially compared with most other varieties of monster fish..

  • Tank Requirements: Good water quality and open swimming areas.

  • Diet: Strict carnivore. Accepts large pellets, fish, prawns, freeze dried shrimp, live fish and other meaty foods. Small juveniles (1-2 Inches) readily accept freeze dried bloodworms.

  • Lifespan: Lives 10–15 years with proper care.

  • Max Size: Reaches up to 24–30 inches (60–75 cm).

  • Growth Rate: Very fast—can grow 1–2 inches per month when young if fed generously and kept in proper conditions.

A true river giant the Peacock bass is best suited for large aquariums or ponds.
