The Panda Corydoras is a small, peaceful bottom-dwelling catfish native to the upper Amazon River basin in Peru and Ecuador. It gets its name from the distinct black patches around its eyes and tail, resembling a panda’s markings. Its gentle nature and lively group behavior make it a favorite for community aquariums.
Key Care Points:
Behavior & Swimming: Peaceful, social, and best kept in groups of six or more. Panda Corys are active bottom dwellers that spend most of their time sifting through the substrate for food. They are also known to dart up occasionally to the water surface for gulps of air.
Tank Requirements: Use a fine sand substrate to protect their sensitive barbels, and include smooth rocks, driftwood, and shaded plant areas. Gentle filtration and clean water are essential for their health.
Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts sinking pellets, algae wafers, and live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. A varied diet keeps them active and healthy.
Lifespan: Typically 5–8 years with proper care.
Max Size: Up to 2 inches (5 cm).
The Panda Corydoras’ playful nature and unique markings make it a charming and reliable addition to peaceful community aquariums.
