The Hockey Stick Tetra (Thayeria boehlkei), also called the Penguin Tetra, is a peaceful schooling fish native to the slow-moving tributaries and floodplains of the Amazon Basin in Peru and Brazil. It’s named for its distinctive black line that runs along the body and angles sharply downward at the tail, giving it a “hockey stick” appearance.

Key Care Points:

  • Behavior & Swimming: Peaceful schooling fish that does best in groups of 6 or more. They are mid-to-top-level swimmers and are known for their slightly tilted, head-up swimming posture, which makes them very eye-catching in a community tank.

  • Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts flakes, pellets, and enjoys frozen/live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.

  • Lifespan: Usually lives 5–8 years with good care.

  • Max Size: Grows up to 2.5–3 inches (6–7.5 cm).

The Hockey Stick Tetra’s unique posture and smooth schooling make it a standout choice for peaceful community tanks.
