Head and Taillight Tetra (Hemigrammus ocellifer) is a small, peaceful freshwater fish native to the slow-moving rivers, flooded forests, and tributaries of the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America. Its name comes from the two reflective spots on its body — a bright golden “headlight” near the gill area and a distinct “taillight” at the base of the tail — which shimmer beautifully as the fish moves.

Key Care Points:

Behavior & Swimming: Peaceful, active schooling fish that does best in groups of six or more. They occupy the midwater region and swim in coordinated groups, with their reflective spots flashing as they dart around.

Diet: Omnivorous. Eats flakes and micro-pellets readily, and like all fish, benefits from added frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.

Lifespan: Typically 4–6 years with good care.

Max Size: Up to 2 inches (5 cm).

The Head and Taillight Tetra’s reflective markings and peaceful schooling behavior make it a subtle yet eye-catching addition to community aquariums.
