Clown Knifefish (Chitala ornata) is a freshwater predator native to parts of Southeast Asia. Known for its distinct silver body covered with dark eye-like spots along the tail and its elegant, wave-like swimming motion, it’s one of the most recognizable and majestic species in the aquarium trade.
Key Care Points:
Behavior & Swimming: Predatory but generally shy when young. Clown Knifefish are solitary and mostly active at night, gliding smoothly along the mid to lower levels of the tank. They can become territorial as they grow and should not be kept with much smaller fish.
Tank Requirements: Strong filtration and stable water parameters are crucial due to their large size and heavy feeding.
Diet: Carnivorous. Prefers live or frozen foods such as shrimp, small fish, bloodworms, and earthworms. Can be trained to accept pellets over time. A protein-rich diet is essential for healthy growth.
Lifespan: Typically 10–15 years with proper care.
Max Size: Up to 3 feet (90 cm) in captivity.
Growth Rate: Fast; juveniles grow rapidly, reaching over 12 inches (30 cm) within their first year under good conditions.
The Clown Knifefish’s elegant swimming style and distinctive spotted pattern make it a true showpiece for experienced aquarists with large aquariums.
