Black Ruby Barb (Pethia nigrofasciata) is a hardy and colorful freshwater fish native to the shaded, slow-flowing streams of Sri Lanka’s wet zone. While juveniles are silver with black vertical bars, mature males develop a deep, dark red to almost black body with vibrant contrasting fins, especially striking during breeding periods.
Key Care Points:
Behavior & Swimming: Peaceful and social, best kept in groups of six or more. They are active midwater swimmers and enjoy schooling together. Males may occasionally spar, but serious aggression is rare in a well-stocked group.
Diet: Omnivorous. Eats flakes, pellets, and enjoys live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. A varied diet enhances both coloration and breeding behavior.
Lifespan: Typically 4–6 years with proper care.
Max Size: Up to 2.5 inches (6 cm).
Growth Rate: Moderate; juveniles show strong growth and full color development within 6–7 months.
The Black Ruby Barb’s dark, rich tones and playful schooling nature make it a standout addition to peaceful, well-planted aquariums.
