Bala Shark
Bala Shark
The Bala Shark (Balantiocheilos melanopterus), also known as the Silver Shark, is a sleek, torpedo-shaped freshwater fish with striking silver scales and black-edged fins. Native to rivers and lakes in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, it is prized for its active behavior and elegant appearance.
Key Care Points:
Behavior: Peaceful but highly active; does best in groups of five or more, as solitary individuals may become stressed. Compatible with other large, non-aggressive fish.
Tank Requirements: Minimum 100 gallons due to their size and need for open swimming space. Tank should have a lid as Bala sharks are know to be jumpers.
Diet: Omnivorous; enjoys a varied diet of high-quality pellets, flakes, vegetable matter, and occasional protein like brine shrimp or bloodworms.
Lifespan: Can live 8-10 years with proper care.
Bala Sharks can reach up to 12-14 inches (30-35 cm) in captivity, so a spacious tank is essential to support their active swimming habits and full growth potential.
