Alligator Gar (Atractosteus spatula) is a large, ancient predatory fish native to the slow-moving rivers, swamps, bayous, and floodplains of the southern United States and parts of the Mississippi River basin. It’s known for its elongated, torpedo-shaped body, armored ganoid scales, and a broad, alligator-like snout lined with sharp teeth. This species has remained almost unchanged for millions of years, making it one of the most iconic freshwater “living fossils.”
Key Care Points:
Behavior & Swimming: Powerful, calm and highly predatory. Adults cruise steadily through the tank and can make sudden bursts when feeding.
Diet: Carnivorous. Juveniles accept live foods like small fish, shrimp, and worms, but can be trained onto frozen or prepared foods such as tilapia pieces, prawns, and carnivore pellets. Adults eat larger fish and meaty foods. We tend to train our gars to accept cut fish pieces to make care easier for the customer.
Lifespan: 30–50+ years in proper conditions.
Max Size: Commonly 4–6 feet (120–180 cm) in captivity; can exceed 8 feet in the wild.
Growth Rate: Fast during the first year, often reaching 12–18 inches quickly, then slowing as they mature.
The Alligator Gar is an impressive, prehistoric species suited to large setups. It is one of the most striking and rewarding giant freshwater monster to keep.
