The Albino Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus) is a slightly rarer and striking variant of the Senegal Bichir. It has a pale body with red eyes, giving it a unique appearance that stands out among other bichirs.
Key Care Points:
-
Behavior: Generally peaceful but predatory — will eat very small tankmates. Best kept with similarly sized or larger fish. A slow, bottom-dwelling swimmer that glides near the substrate and surfaces for air occasionally. Mostly active at dusk and night, but becomes bolder once used to the tank. Can be very active sometimes.
-
Tank Requirements: Needs a spacious tank. Keep a tight lid as bichirs can be skilled jumpers.
-
Diet: Carnivorous. Eats pellets, frozen shrimp, bloodworms, and occasional live foods. We also feed chicken liver and other meaty foods including cut fish.
-
Lifespan: Can live 10–15 years with proper care.
-
Max Size: Reaches about 12–14 inches (30–35 cm) in captivity.
-
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast; can reach 8–10 inches within the first year if well-fed.
The Albino Senegal Bichir’s prehistoric look and unique coloration make it a showpiece for large predator tanks.
