The Albino Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) is a striking and intelligent cichlid known for its creamy white body and pinkish eyes. A color variant of the wild Oscar, this fish is admired for its personality, responsiveness to humans, and powerful presence in large aquariums.
Key Care Points:
-
Behavior: Semi-aggressive and highly territorial, especially as it matures. Displays strong individual personality and can recognize its owner. Best kept alone or with other large, robust fish.
-
Tank Requirements: Requires powerful filtration, open swimming space. Oscars are known to jump so make sure to keep the water level adequately low or use a lid.
-
Diet: Carnivorous; thrives on high-protein pellets, supplemented with earthworms, frozen shrimp, and occasional vegetables like peas. Will also take live feed.
-
Lifespan: Typically lives 10–15 years with excellent care.
-
Max Size: Grows up to 12–14 inches (30–35 cm).
-
Growth Rate: Fast; juveniles can grow over 1 inch per month in their first year.
The Albino Oscar’s interactive nature makes it a centerpiece fish for large aquariums and experienced keepers.
